A New Series | 01
Written media seems like a lost art form. Life’s routine moments used to be intermingled with written media; nowadays it’s been replaced by infinitely scrolling short form content. The pendulum has swung so far in one direction that I wonder if it’ll ever swing back. I know that’s quite literally not how a pendulum works, but I think that’s kind of the point.
I’ve gone back and forth about starting a blog the last few months, but I was finding myself struggling to commit to it. Partially because I kept losing access to my website and partially because committing to a habit that you’ve yet to make feels like committing to building a house on sand. And if you’re not making video content, are people even going to see it? But I was reminded recently after filming an episode of The Comic Room Pod (a podcast that I host with my father-in-law) that we started that out of nothing. And here we are now; 2 years running, 80 episodes in, and no desire to slow down any time soon. So sometimes, you just have to start.
And with that… hi, my name is Joshua and in this online space I’m also known as “Spro.” I’ve been slinging comics full-time for almost 2 years now and enjoy every minute of it. Both when the FOMO is running hot and when there doesn’t seem to be a single comic book on the market with a pulse.
My aim is to post weekly and before I publish this I’m sure I’ll find a way to make sure there’s some sort of subscribe button so you can get this to your email and not have to come to the website every week to read it. Unless you want to do that, then by all means do your thing. I’ll talk comics, let you guys know the type of coffee I’m sipping on (my deep passion for coffee will be revealed through this, you will all see soon), and probably just word vomit about stuff going on in our hobby. Especially these days, seems like there’s a lot of hot topics to engage with. I’m currently reading through the Invincible run for the first time so expect some of that, as well as whatever I’ve got going on my pull list. There’s also a ton of iconic runs that I’ve never actually read before that I want to finally get into. I have very early-stage concepts of plans for some long form YouTube content with that, but I only just started thinking about that yesterday. Either way, I will definitely be talking about that journey here.
Overall, I hope it’ll be a good time. I love writing, it’s what I was planning to study before I dropped out of undergrad, it’s something I wish I did more, and know that I’ll never do enough – but this is a good start. I look forward to whatever this blog may bring as it goes along.
As for the type of coffee I’m drinking today, I’m actually not. My wife let me know that she saved the last few grams of matcha from our recent Japan trip for me. It’s from a place called “Marukyu Koyamaen” out in Uji, Japan, the matcha capital of the world. It is delicious.
